The 32nd piece in my 'ACTIVISTS' series.

With thanks to my dear friend @helen.ara for allowing me to meet and photograph her feathery friends.

She told me: 'The ladies are survivors of the egg industry and they are 7 years old! (born in 2015). Due to the genetic manipulation which makes these birds lay a phenomenally abnormal number of eggs each year, they suffer from life threatening diseases which often takes their lives early. At my sanctuary they are given regular hormone implants to arrest the laying cycle, so live much longer and healthier lives.

Arthur is only three (born in 2019), a reject at just a few months old because of his gender, who happily found his little flock here under the oak trees.'

@helen.ara is a great friend and fellow animal rights artivist, and, after 2 years of covid-induced separation, it was a pleasure to finally meet the residents living good lives in the safe haven of her lovely sanctuary.

Helen told me: 'I don’t like to say any of those in my care are ‘rescued’, rather that they are survivors of the system which creates a mindset that other animals are here to be used by humans. These survivors happen to have found their way to me, through various routes, and I strive daily to give them space to have some autonomy and just live true to themselves. Like many sanctuary folk, I constantly feel woefully inadequate at this. Wiltshire and the other three cockerels here all survived the trend for keeping ‘ backyard’ chickens in order to use their eggs. Males are considered useless, noisy or aggressive, so are either given away ‘for the pot’, dumped and left to fend for themselves (as in Wiltshire’s case) or just killed. I am so grateful for the tireless work of Big Red Rooster, Cockerel Rescue who linked me up with the lovely lady who found Wilts. He was roaming about looking for food and shelter with his brother, who sadly disappeared before she could bring them into her garden.

Cockerels are much maligned and gravely misunderstood, and these guys have taught me so much about the proud, brave, loving and protective people they all are'

The 30th piece in my ACTIVISTS series.

I met these beautifully majestic creatures a few weeks ago and was taken aback by their size. They towered over the fence and munched down about ten massive French Sticks in no time at all. Then it dawned on me - the reason for their surprising size - when do you ever meet a dairy cow who has been 'allowed' to grow old? These male cows would normally have been killed shortly after being born, or raised in vile conditions for veal. The strength and vitality of these beautiful boys was a forcible reminder of the insane brutality of dairy farming.

Hopefield's story:

With only half an acre of land, Paula and Ernie Clark founded Hopefield in 1983. They started taking horses with the intention to foster. They would bring the horses back to health and then find them nice homes. The first horse they fostered out was Pye, soon after they heard that the foster owners were trying to sell him, so Ernie took them to court and got Pye back. He was in a terrible state, so both Paula and Ernie promised they would never rehome again, and all future animals had a home for life.

As the sanctuary grew, Ernie and Paula both gave up their jobs to look after the animals that so badly needed them. Paula put out a call for land and they came across the land that Hopefield sits on today, which is owned by Tesco who kindly let them use it for a peppercorn rent. They both received an MBE and have inspired many people to save hundreds of animals' lives.

Paula lost her battle with cancer in 2009 and Ernie kept his promise to her to continue their work at Hopefield, which he did until he passed away in 2011.

Hopefield has continued to rescue horses and farm animals of all kinds, and over the years the type of animals they rescued has greatly changed - it is now home to many types of animals including small animals, alpacas, reindeer, exotic animals and more. We have opened a reptile room and also taken in many exotic mammals including Raccoons, Tanuki, Marmosets, a skunk and many more as well as birds of prey.

The 29th painting in my 'ACTIVISTS' series.

When I met Fieps at the International Animal Rights Conference I was immediately captivated by the bright and fierce spark of life that shone out of her tiny body. Just like everyone else who met her, I could clearly sense their was something very special about her.

Her lovely human companion, Animal Rights Activist Anna Krijger, has this to say about this miniature force-of-nature:

"I met Fieps when I was working as a volunteer in the animal shelter in Amsterdam. She was brought in by the police, her "owner" had neglected and abused her. She was very skinny and had an infected wound on one of her hind legs, so the vet in the shelter had to amputate it. I already had two rescue dogs from Palestine at that moment but figured that the addition of a 2kg chihuahua wouldn't be too much too handle.

After a few weeks of recovery and a lot of pain, I finally got to see the real Fieps. She was so cheerful and sweet! Like nothing bad had ever happened to her. She would walk the stairs up and down with her three legs, loved to play catch (with a very tiny ball) and she was totally happy. Her resilience was inspiring! I brought her with me wherever I went. She loved to travel in her little basket and get all the cuddles from my friends and colleagues. I always took her to the International Animal Rights Conference in Luxembourg. The week before she died she attended a demonstration of Stichting Animal Rights against a horrific slaughterhouse in Belgium. She was an amazing mascot for animal rights and the best example of 'adopt don't shop'.

She passed away recently and I miss her every day."

The 28th painting in my ACTIVISTS series.

This photo of artist and activist Anne Shaughnessy (@canadianlandscapeartist) sums up my feelings having read of the dreadful abuse suffered by the huskies at this vile operation - it encapsulates the intense sorrow and joy of what must have been a heart-breaking weekend of exhausting and emotional effort.

Anne told me: 'This scene is from a dog sled operation called Expeditions Mi-Loup, near Quebec City, which ceased operating after a W5 story on CTV in February 2022.

On the weekend of April 2-3, all the dogs were rescued and sent to rescue/foster and forever homes, never to be exploited again. It was an emotionally charged few days, as the dogs were taken away to start their new lives in Ontario and Quebec.'

With immense thanks to @jennyveganmcqueen for capturing this moment on camera, and @shaytheactivist for enduring intense personal struggles as she dealt with the perpetrators of the cruelty, and organised the team that made this rescue such a huge success.

My hardback novel 'What am I to do with all this love?' written and illustrated over the course of 2012.

Stories created in every spare moment I had - at bus stops, in lunchtime coffeeshops, and at my desk in the office when I should have been working. I obsessed over the characters I created, and I still do now!

The book is an interview with six elderly clowns who tell tales of their strange, wonderful and curious loves - stories that paint a picture of the coastal town of Mundi and its giants, gardeners, ghosts, alchemists, mechanical sailors, mad men and beauty queens.

In May 2019 I received an email from a stranger who asked if I'd be interested in being involved with a project to get an Animal Rights Art book published. I've heard this sort of thing so many times before I almost deleted the email. Thankfully I didn't, as the chap who sent it was 100% serious, as well as MEGA-SUCCESSFUL in his artistic career, AND a uniquely creative force of nature. TOMMY KANE is nothing less than a hero for battling through 2 years of covid-induced delay and seeing this project through to its completion. And now, three years later, I'm SO proud to announce the launch of an amazing, high quality, hardback Art Book that features a selection of my most iconic artworks from the first years of my career in 'Artivism'. I'm also incredibly moved to be able to count the other contributors as my friends - whose talent and ethics I admire greatly - and some of whom I actually see regularly for coffee and cakes.

This fine volume contains a huge variety of beautiful, grotesque, and challenging artworks. it is uncomfortable, satirical, truthful - but most of all it's full of a heartfelt empathy with the natural world that our species is so determinedly destroying.

Almost five years ago I stepped out of my job into an uncertain future as an independent artist, and this book represents the peak of my personal achievements so far. With the continual love, support and encouragement of my partner and close friends, I chose to follow my heart and to focus on animal rights, and I finally became the artist I always wanted to be.

The 27th piece in my 'ACTIVISTS' series.

Sanctuary co-founder Morag told me this: 'Francisco is a failed micro pig, as they all are, of course.
He was bought for a 15yr old girl as a present, but the novelty wore off and he was getting too big so they asked us to take him, he was only 3 months old.
It was winter and snowy when he arrived, so we kept him in the house as he was so tiny, and he was used to it from his old home.
We thought he would want to live with the other pigs in the stable when he got bigger, but that just never happened, now it's been over 4 years that he has been sleeping in the house.
He has a bed upstairs in a small room he shares with the dogs, and he always makes his way up there every night.
He spends the day wandering around the sanctuary and visiting the neighbour, who loves him, but always wants indoors if it's raining.

He is house trained and just a sweet and greedy boy, clever and laid back.'

The 26th piece in my ACTIVISTS series.

Sanctuary co-owner Morag told me this: 'Basil is a sweet boy, he came to us with his brother when they were just babies, they were the unwanted 'by product' of a rare breed breeding programme, which was going on at a castle in Ayrshire. John came across them on a website called Preloved, they were being given away and there were no takers.

We got in touch with the breeders and they gave them to us.

Basil and his brother were terrified beyond belief, taken too early from their mum and in a strange environment. They took months to finally warm to us, but now they are cheeky and friendly, and enjoy the company of the other goats. They are still inseparable.'

'MAP OF THE HUMAN HEART'

The second of my four 'new' (actually very old) Fine Art Prints now available from my Etsy store (link in bio) This one is from 2009, painted in acrylic on an A1 size wooden board. A dream landscape of the theatrical machineries of Heaven and Hell, with much colourful complexity and confusion on display...

This is a very large piece that came tumbling out of a turbulent time in my life. A friend said that this vision of a dreamworld afterlife had its own 'internal logic' that reminded her of the work of the visionary William Blake. With hindsight, I realise that this artwork was what kick-started my love of poetry, storytelling, and creating my own novels. So this angelic/demonic otherworld really was the beginning of my life as a professionally weird artist.

'The Gar Tree'

Commemorating the Gar Trees that were the 'talking trees' of England prior to the Norman invasion of 1066. There was one tree for every 'Hundred' (region) in the land and they provided a local 'parliament' for the inhabitants of that area. These were practical, spiritual, magical and natural places, and the trees were the symbol of all four.

'Morag and McAllan - Tribe Animal Sanctuary, Scotland, 2022'

The 25th painting in my ACTIVISTS series.

Creating this work affected me deeply as although I only met this feisty little chap for a few short hours, he made a big impression on me. Please read the following story to see why I cared so much about commemorating this one tiny life.

Morag: 'He came to us after a nice human found him soaked and unable to walk. His mother was nowhere to be seen, and when the human returned later, it was still the same, so they took him in, and dried him. They then brought him to us, after asking if we could take him.

We feared the worst for him, as he couldn't use his back legs, and the vet was called a lot. After a couple of weeks he did manage to walk, and even run a few months later. He had a pal called Belzebob, who was getting bottle fed at the same time, and as the weather got warmer and they grew, they went to live in the paddock with the other sheep.

After the following winter we noticed that he was very thin and getting weaker, his back legs started to fail again, and the vet was at a loss as the what was wrong with him.

He had a sweet nature. He was trusting and open to everyone, you just couldn't help loving him. He would look at you with those big button eyes and everyone would just fall for him. I've seen big blokes reduced to soppy messes over him.

Sadly, despite the best living care we could give him, his condition deteriorated in a month to the point where it was clear his life was coming to an end, we had to make the awful decision to have him put to sleep.

It was one of our most devastating losses, and there have been many.'

'Basil and Rosie - Tribe Animal Sanctuary, Scotland, 2022'

The 24th piece in my ACTIVISTS series.

Sanctuary co-owner Morag told me this: 'Both these goats are of the bagot breed. Rosie is the daughter of a dairy goat, the previous owner couldn't face getting rid of her and her brother, so she kept them as pets along with their mother. Then she chucked the whole goat milking business altogether and asked us if we could take them.

Rosie is quite the madam, and used to be a bit angry and resentful, but has really mellowed out in the last year or so, maybe something to do with her mother dying. We think the mother had cancer.

The other goat is a sweet boy, he came to us with his brother when they were just babies, they were the unwanted 'by product' of a rare breed breeding programme, which was going on at a castle in Ayrshire. John came across them on a website called Preloved, they were being given away and there were no takers.

We got in touch with the breeders and they gave them to us.

Basil and his brother were terrified beyond belief, taken too early from their mum and in a strange environment. They took months to finally warm to us, but now they are cheeky and friendly, and enjoy the company of the other goats. They are still inseparable.'
